Sierra Nevada - Santa Marta

History
In the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, climatic conditions allow only one annual coffee harvest, usually between October and January. Factors such as high solar radiation in the Colombian Caribbean and a prolonged dry season influence this cycle. The coffee grown in the region belongs to the Coffea arabica species, the same one produced throughout Colombia. The main varieties grown in the Sierra Nevada include Castillo, Colombia, Caturra, TÃpica, Cenicafé 1 and TabÃ. Among them, the Castillo and TÃpica varieties stand out for their resistance to pests and diseases, important characteristics in coffee cultivation in this area.
In the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, in addition to farmers, indigenous communities are also involved in coffee planting. Among the ethnic groups in the region, which include the Arhuacos, Koguis, Wiwas and Kankuamos, some have developed their own products, particularly notable for the quality of their coffee.
